Five District Consumer Disputes Rederssal Forums in Tamil Nadu are currently without a President.

This information was provided in response to an RTI application filed by a consumer activist, who has since approached the Madras High Court seeking a Government order to fill the vacancies.

While Coimbatore, Namakkal, Vellore and Thiruvannamalai Districts have had vacancies since June, last year, the Nagapattinam post has been lying vacant since October. Madurai has not had a president since April 2011.

“The posts of members are kept vacant for more than eight months. Because of the vacancy in the District Consumer Redressal Forums consumers are deprived of their fundamental right. It discourages consumers and encourages violators,” N Logu, Secretary, Coimbatore Consumer Voice, said in his petition.

The RTI application also threw up the information that 8,245 cases are pending across the state, of which 2,067 are from the six districts without Presidents.

In Tamil Nadu, 25 districts have consumer redressal forums and five districts have united recovery organizations. The consumer recovery organization is one that clears small cases in 90 days and big cases in 180 days.
