TRAI has brought up a proposal for streamlining tariff of the broadcasting and cable services. TRAI has asked for written comments from stake holders.
The key points for discussion are
1. Each channel should declare the nature of channel as “free to air” or “pay” for different geographical areas.
2. Television households should payRs.130/- as monthly rental for set top box for 100 standard definition channels.
3. Regulator has proposed genre-wise ceilings an channel prices. But it also has said distributors can earn from bouquets from a la carte channels.
4. Definitions on “General channels” “Premium channels” needs to be explained.
5. Educating the consumer on the new pricing and “options available” will have to be taken up, so that those who are not happy with the rules, can take it to a court
