Railway passengers will be able to avail of a travel insurance by paying just one rupee, come September. Passengers booking their tickets through the IRCTC website will be able to avail of this facility.

The insurance scheme will be available to all passengers across classes, barring those travelling by suburban trains.

Passengers can opt for the scheme simply by checking the relevant box while booking their e-tickets through the Railways’ official website. Those opting for the facility will be prompted to fill in nomination details.

Under the scheme, passengers or their families will be eligible for a compensation of up to Rs10 lakh in the event of death or permanent total disability of the insured person, Rs 7.5 lakh for permanent partial disability, up to Rs 2 lakh for hospitalisation expenses and Rs 10,000 for transportation of mortal remains in the event of death or injury from a train accident or other “untoward incident” including terrorist attacks, dacoity, rioting, or arson.
