Most of the online platforms like Flipkart, Amazon, Snap deal and others are getting flooded by requests from consumers on products believed to enhance their fortunes. Hanuman Chalisa Yantra, Dhan Lakshmi Yantra, Vermillion sindoor, these are doing rounds with people who aim to ward off evil eye, get mental peace, relief from debt, get happiness and prosperity. Consumers are flocking into these companies for the supply of such articles. Sales have risen by 50% in the past 3 years.

For example the Yantra of Pardeshi is a geometrically cut sheet, with embedded Sanskrit inscriptions, which is believed to ward off “Sani dosha” (Saturn’s evil effect) . The Yantra which was to bring changes, brought changes in itself. The Gold sheen started to fade.

More than 70% of the shoppers for such products are from upper middle class families of top cities. Nearly 60% of the buyers are women.

This “Religious industry” is worth Rs.2500 crores and is not restricted to Hinduism alone. Awareness drives by social activists have started to stop people from believing such concocted stories and to help them from being cheated
