The Food Safety Commissionerate here has stepped up efforts to ensure hygiene in hotels and eateries, including wayside stalls, and curb the outbreak of infectious diseases during the monsoon season.

Food squads are conducting checks on the quality of food sold in various types of outlets.

Notices have been served to those establishments where the standards of hygiene have not been maintained, said K.V. Shibu, food safety assistant commissioner.

The officials are checking not only for sub-standard food but also for unhealthy practices like re-using oil and not maintaining the quality of water. Staff at these eateries are also being coached on the importance of safety, and ways to ensure sanitation.

The quality of water from diverse sources, including water tankers, is also being monitored.
