Certain medications commonly used to treat cancers of the brain and breast, as well as for other diseases like heart ailments, diabetes and hypertension will cost less with immediate effect.

The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has brought down the prices of 54 essential drugs by up to 55 per cent, as part of its price regulation exercise to make the treatment of critical illnesses more affordable.

This is the second price revision in the last 15 days. Earlier, on April 28, the regulator had capped the prices of another set of 54 drugs.

Medicines account for a major part of the total health expenditure, particularly in tertiary care.
