The Consumers Union has a rare word of praise for McDonald’s – it has said that the fast food major has kept its word to stop using antibiotics-fed chicken on its menu, and in fact, had done so ahead of its own deadline – March 2017.

Commending McDonald’s, Consumers Union’s Director of Food Policy initiatives, Jean Halloran, pointed out that the food chain’s success proved that it is entirely possible to eliminate the use of livestock raised with the use of antibiotics on a large scale without affecting supply.

Scientists have warned that consumption of meat from animals reared with the reckless use of antibiotics contributes to the antibiotics resistance crisis.

“We urge Kentucky Fried Chicken and other fast food restaurants to follow McDonald’s lead and make the same commitment to public health,” Halloran said.
