Nearly ten years after he lost his son in an elevator accident in a high-rise building, P G Pai has been awarded compensation of Rs. 1.89 crores by the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC).

The NCDRC Bench which heard the case has asked the owners of Bhagwati House, the building in which the mishap took place, and Care Elevators and Engineering Co. Pvt. Ltd., the company in charge of maintaining the elevator, to pay the sum to the complainant.

The victim, Rohan Pai, then 25 years old, died a gruesome death in 2005 because the elevator was defective. The complainant had sought compensation of Rs. 4.89 crores.

The NCDRC disregarded the contention of the owner of the building and the lift maintenance company that Rohan was not their consumer, and that the mishap had occurred due to his negligence. The firm where Rohan was employed had paid its dues for the facility of using the lift, and so Rohan was indeed a consumer, the Commission held.
