Karnataka Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi is taking steps to see that private hospitals display the cost of various treatment regimen.

He has instructed health department officials to ensure that the rule mandating private hospitals to put up display boards stating the prices of various treatment schedules is complied with. He was acting on a number of complaints that private hospitals were fleecing patients.

A specific complaint about exorbitant charges for snakebite – which should be between Rs. 6000 and Rs. 8000 but was usually in the range of Rs. 40,000 to 50,000 in private hospitals, was the trigger for the Minister taking such a step.

Jarkiholi also acted on complaints of doctors being absent from primary health centres by directing that the medical officers’ cars be fitted with GPS tracking systems.
