A study by the Norway-based Telenor Group says that Internet scams are increasing in India, despite growing awareness, and the most popular among scammers are the work-from-home, lottery and bank-email routes.

New online scams are being reported every day, says the study titled

“Internet Scams.”

With expanding Internet accessibility in India scammers are inventing new ways to access consumers’ personal information, the study found.

In “work from home” scams, gullible consumers are either persuaded to give money to someone to start a business, or take on home-based work for which they never get paid. In lottery scams, people are fooled into paying ‘processing fees’ as a purported precondition to collecting large ‘winnings’. And fake e-mails from banks trick people into revealing their personal information.

“Online security is extremely relevant in India where over one third of internet users surveyed have been victim to an internet scam and a further 57 percent know a friend or family member who has been scammed online,” the findings showed.

The multi-market survey assessed the impact of scams on 400 internet users aged 18- 65 plus in India Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. While regionally, the average financial loss per person was Rs.681,070 , in India, the average loss was Rs.819,000.
