Srinagar, February 2016: In a bid to fast-track the large number of pending cases relating to unsafe and sub-standard food, the Government has set up two Food Safety Appellate Tribunals in Jammu and Kashmir.

The tribunals will function, one each, in the Kashmir and Jammu divisions, making Jammu and Kashmir one of the first States in the country to have such a facility. At present, such tribunals are functioning only in Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh, and the Union Territories of Andaman & Nicobar and Chandigarh.

The relevant order was issued by the Commissioner/Secretary, Health and Medical Education Department, who is also Commissioner, Food Safety, J&K.

Complaints about unsafe, sub-standard and misbranded food products have been piling up in the Magistrate’s Courts and District Courts of the State, sources said.
