The Delhi Government has issued a circular to all schools in the national capital to increase awareness about the dangers of food high in fats, sugar and salt (HFSS), and consider banning them from school canteens.

The directive follows a Delhi High Court order asking Government to ban the sale of junk foods and HFSS foods in and around schools.

The circular from the Directorate of Education asks heads of both private and Government schools to take steps to create awareness at the student and parent level about the harm that HFSS foods could cause.

The schools have also been directed to popularize healthy and indigenous foods such as “vegetable sandwiches, paneer cutlets, khandvi, poha and low fat milk shakes with seasonal fruits, lassi and jaljeera etc.”
