The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), which had recently listed a number of drinking water packaging units which were operating without licenses, including big names like Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Bisleri, has now absolved these food majors from the charges. The FSSAI has clarified that the units of these big companies did, in fact, have valid licenses and BIS certification.

The clarification comes after the food regulator and BIS officials held a meeting with representatives of Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Bisleri.

The companies had asserted that their units were appropriately licensed and certified, and had forwarded the relevant documents to the FSSAI. “The details forwarded by these Food Business Operators were verified by FSSAI and it was found that these FBOs have valid FSSAI/BIS licence and certification. It can be safely concluded that the said FBOs comply with relevant provisions of FSS Act, Rules and Regulations,” an official statement said.

The FSSAI will take appropriate action to ensure quality and safety of packaged drinking water, the statement added.
