A Café Coffee Day outlet here, where a customer’s credit card was debited twice for the same bill of Rs. 233, has been asked to pay the person a compensation of Rs. 10,000 for refusing to reimburse him for the wrongfully deducted amount.

Vishal Gargi moved the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum saying he had ordered coffee and snacks worth Rs 233, and had tried to pay the bill using his card, but no receipt was generated due to some problem. He therefore settled the bill in cash. However, he later came to know that two amounts of Rs. 233 had been debited from his card in favour of Café Coffee Day.

Gargi brought the matter to the notice of the management of the eatery and requested a refund, but they dismissed his claim.

The Forum, which heard the case in the absence of representatives from the fast food chain, decided that there had been unfair trade practice which resulted in financial loss and mental tension to Vishal. It directed the outlet to refund the amount of Rs 466 along with interest at 9% per annum from the date of receipt of the money, besides the compensation amount.
