Food safety continues to be an issue in India, with as many as 14,599 of the over 74,000 samples tested, failing to meet various standards in 2015.

Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Faggan Singh Kulaste, told the Lok Sabha in response to a question that 19.72% of the samples tested were found to be adulterated and misbranded.

He said in Maharashtra alone, 6,985 food samples were analysed, and 1,162 of them were found to be adulterated, while 1,243 samples of the 11,700 tested in Gujarat failed the tests.
